Sinema Mtaani: Empowering Filmmakers Across Six Counties

Sinema Mtaani is an innovative and empowering program dedicated to bringing the magic of cinema to the public and fostering the growth of young filmmakers in Kenya. Initiated by Alliance Française de Mombasa, in collaboration with the French Embassy in Kenya, the County Government of Mombasa, and the Communication Authority of Kenya, this initiative serves six counties: Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River. At its core, Sinema Mtaani aims to create a vibrant and inclusive film culture by hosting free, open-air film screenings and facilitating intensive training workshops for aspiring filmmakers.

Open-Air Film Screenings: Bringing Cinema to the People

Twice a month, Sinema Mtaani sets up open-air film screenings across Mombasa's six sub-counties, transforming public spaces into lively venues of entertainment and cultural exchange. These screenings showcase a mix of quality films, including local productions, providing a platform for Mombasa's filmmakers to present their work to a broad audience. The objectives of these events are multifaceted: to entertain and foster community spirit, to promote local cinema, and to educate the youth on the nuances of film language. The program also uses these screenings to raise awareness on crucial themes such as the environment, citizenship, and health.

Kino Lab: A Collaborative Training Ground for Filmmakers

Kino Lab, an integral part of Sinema Mtaani, is a project designed to promote young filmmakers through immersive and collaborative workshops. Led by Alliance Française de Mombasa, the first Kino Lab training session brought together 25 film industry participants, both veterans and newcomers, for a series of interactive sessions. The workshop’s primary goal was to collaboratively produce a short film within a limited timeframe.

From brainstorming story ideas to writing scripts and filming, the participants experienced every step of the filmmaking process. The emphasis on collaboration allowed them to enhance their skills and knowledge significantly. After five days of intensive training, the filmmakers premiered their short film, a testament to their hard work and teamwork.

Additionally, CFA mentors run workshops in Mombasa’s public schools, offering film and audiovisual education to young students. These sessions help students decipher the language of film, develop artistic skills, and explore potential careers in the film industry.

Empowering the Next Generation

Sinema Mtaani is more than just a film program; it is a movement dedicated to empowering the next generation of filmmakers in Kenya. By providing platforms for showcasing films and offering hands-on training, it nurtures talent and fosters a collaborative spirit among young creatives. As Sinema Mtaani continues to grow, it will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the future of Kenyan cinema.
